Insider Tips: Time Management
This month's ProTip comes to you from our Managing Director of Engineering, Pete Jackson:
We are all super-busy. As you start juggling multiple projects and other responsibilities, you can find yourself fire drilling frequently. To keep myself sane, I live and die by my calendar. It's my most important tool, even before vi, rvm, or bundler.
A few tips I use to stay organized and focused:
- Schedule blocks of work-time. If you need to go heads down on a task, block the time on your calendar and go dark (turn off email and other distractions for the blocked time).
- Need to get your busy boss or colleague into a meeting with a client? Use "Hold for [CLIENT]" meetings to invite your busy co-workers without waiting for your client to confirm. You can always delete the meeting if your client can't make the time.
- Set up and encourage people to use your office hours! Do you get a lot of "pings" during the day for expertise or advice? We all like to be helpful, but constant interruptions can be distracting. Set up appointment slots on your calendar and let people sign up for 10 minutes to ask that burning question about Backbone or node.js.
- Don't stack back-to-back. Schedule meetings that start at 5-past and end at 5-before the hour. Give yourself time to refresh your coffee or collect yourself without being late for your next GTM.
- Do what your calendar says you're doing, and nothing else. As your calendar starts representing your work plan for the week, stick to it! Bonus: you'll have something to refer back to as you fill out your timecard.
